Hi all, I recently joined this site hoping to either join in a game of Dip or start one. I've read the rules and would like to try my hand at it. I'm a veteran of Risk and while certainly different in many respects, the core of Dip seems to have much in common with Risk. Would anyone care to join me in a game?

Welcome to Redscape, Mac. It's been awhile since we've seen a standard game here but maybe there's a potential GM lurking out there?

In the meantime, you might want to pick up a game at one of the sites that use auto-judges:

http://vdiplomacy.com/index.php
http://webdiplomacy.net/

Check back in on occasion to see if a game is offered. It might even be time for another game of NWO (how about it, Sendric?). You are welcome to run a game here yourself but I wouldn't suggest doing so until you've played at least once. There are lots of examples of well-run games in the archives.

It's pretty quiet around here but the games are of high quality. I hope you're able to get into one soon.

Seconded !

I really want to play the next NWO but I'm going to be travelling through India in a rickshaw for pretty much the whole of August, so if we wait too much longer then I'll have to pass since it takes months to complete. We need to get a move on !

Maclaine: Diplomacy is actually very different from Risk in so many ways. I suspect you'll enjoy it though. The depth of gameplay and the extent of the interaction with the other players makes it far superior in my opinion. Unfortunately, this site has grown pretty quiet over recent years and there's not a lot of new games starting. There are other Dip sites out there which run through automated adjudication software that have a much bigger player base. You'll find it easier to get a game at one of those, but it wouldn't be as much fun. The old-school email based games that we run here (when we run them) attract a much more mature and interesting crowd and are much more fun to play.

One thing that we do specialise in here is crazy variants that are not available anywhere else. You'll have seen us talking about NWO, which is far and away the biggest and craziest Dip variant ever devised and is only ever played here. That only ever tends to happen about once a year though because of the demands it places on the GM. As luck would have it though, Tom seems to be looking into running another Explore game. This is another very popular and totally unique variant. Maybe email him to express your interest ? It's nothing like regular Dip but it has a very committed group of players who love it.

Thank you all for the welcome and the advice. I actually was looking for a play by email game purposefully since I have a copy of the game at home and wanted to have a running game on my desk that I could keep up with through the winter/spring. What is Tom's email? I would love to try the explore variant. :)

He posted it in the thread below this one. Your board at home wouldn't be much use in that game though. He creates unique maps every time and sends out unique emails to each player revealing their localised bit of it, with more being discovered every time you moved your units (hence the Civ aspect). It's a very different way to play the game.

I don't see Tom's email in his announcement. Two alternatives:

1. Post in Tom's thread and leave your email.
2. Click on Tom's avatar (watch that punch!) and send an email through the Redscape system.

By the way, another site where you can get into PBEM Dip is the Diplomatic Corp site:
http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/

They regularly run games for beginners. Too bad you weren't here some years ago. We used to have up to 30+ games running at the same time. But that was then and it ain't now. A lot of the action has gone to the interactive online sites, such as SloTerp first mentioned.

If I had more time on my hands, I'd be happy to GM a Standard game here. Well, that depends upon how I do in the current game I'm in. Good luck!

Tom, you want me to advertise it elsewhere? I don't think the game will fill if it's only advertised here (unfortunately).

Probably a good idea. I REALLY wanted it to remain kind of quiet to draw as many newcomers as possible (though past players are of course more than welcome!) sort of a Redscape "find" for those who looked but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere yet
