Gamer's Guide to Diplomacy

Avalon Hill published several of these. They both have overviews of the game and country by country strategies. Pretty cool - I'm surprised I've never seen these.

Came across this article from 2004 in the Washington Post. The article surrounds Tempest in a Teapot, the annual tourney hosted by the Potomac Tea & Knife Society.

Ira Glass interviews David Hill (the guy who wrote the Grantland article linked above) on This American Life. I think he references Randy at about the 4th minute. He goes on to talk about the WDC's at Chapel Hill last year - the one Steve, Freeman, & Tom were at.

About 22 minutes overall - fun stuff.

Thanks for the link! I listened but could not make out any mention of Randy. Or was it by some indirect reference?

The guy at the house tourney who responded to a stab with "F*** you" has some Randy in him. Otherwise, completely made that up.

Truthfully, I could never see Randy cuss someone out in a ftf Diplomacy game - he's been to several of my house games (years ago when I had the time) and though intense, never abusive to me or gone on a public rant.

Here's a scholarly article about how increased politeness can be a preamble to a Diplomacy backstab. Who knew the game has become the subject of academic discourse?!

Here is the source of the link - a magazine article about the above. Someone should tell the author that backstabbing is most definitely not 'cheating'.

I enjoyed reading most of the links and if I did not know about the game already, I would have thought it sounded like a pretty cool game! One thing that made me chuckle was the supposed communication exchange between Germany and Austria, it may have worked for the unknowing masses but c'mon, Germany tells Austria "Move east and I will support you later"? Move WHERE? Support you HOW later? It was very generic and honestly, if someone negotiated like this with me, he would be toast!

But the whole interest of spotting a stab, no kidding! And I have actually been stabbed by some simply because I was being too nice and cheerful (with no stab in my plans) the others thinking I was setting them up because my tone was just too polite and nice. ...go figure, I need to be more of a jerk I guess?

I sold a copy of AH's Deluxe Diplomacy a long time ago and could just kick the crap out of myself for not saving the photocopy I had made of the guide that came within the rulebook. Thanks for posting these because that's what it had in it: the country-by-country playing guide to Diplomacy.

Of course, after going through these two booklets, the one included in the rulebook/guidebook with AH Deluxe Diplomacy actually didn't seem near as thorough as these two!

Anyone have Deluxe Diplomacy? What an idiot I was to sell that...

I recently acquired a copy of Diplomacy, probably the 1982 or '85 AH ed. with the plastic stars and anchors in near-perfect condition, and the owner was kind enough to include a mint-condition copy of the Diplomacy Gamer's Guide, 1979 ed., that you posted above.

I noticed that not all the pages were in the post above: there's actually like 5 or 6 more pages, including a full game with commentary. I'd be interested in seeing a link that had the whole thing (though maybe that was a copyright issue?) I suppose I could scan mine, but don't wanna crease the pages (yeah, I'm that anal about it LOL).

Very useful and instructive little booklet in my opinion!

You're right. The linked guides are not complete. Here's a description of all three versions at BGG:

I wouldn't worry about copyrights. These are long out of publication and I doubt anyone would care if they're in the public domain.

True. Actually it's like the last 15 pp which sux: it has the entire sample game, from a 1966 postal play, in those pages as well as some Q & A.

This is still the best thing I've ever read about Diplomacy:

Since it's an actual book, I tried to look for a reasonable print copy of it. In "acceptable" condition it's like, $100+ on Alibris and B&N's used/oop book network. Wow.

You MUST be right, then!
