For those watching, here's the league site: Redscape SOM League

We're all set to draft this Saturday. Not many Redscapers in the league but that's ok.

I hate drafting first.

Draft order:
1. Ashburn Cows
2. Chicago VII
3. FLUSHING TOILETS
4. Happy Valley Black shoes
5. Iron Islands Krakens
6. East Wareham Pile Drivers
7. deja vu
8. Westwood Sluggers
9. Long Island Lizards
10. Montreal Expos
11. Winterfell Direwolves 2
12. Riley County Stampede

The Redscaper's are myself (Cows), Freeman (Sluggers), and Jared (Black Shoes). The rest are unknowns but maybe we can get a few to check us out.

I'll post regular updates as the league progresses.

The Cows took two of three from the Sluggers in the opening series at Nationals Park, the home of the Cows. The Sluggers' Matt Harvey dominated the Cows in the opener but David Price & the Cow's pen held the Sluggers scoreless in game two. In the rubber match, Brandon Beachy out-dueled Alex Cobb to give the home team the series win.

Here's game two, the one-hitter against the Sluggers. Jose Fernandez actually pitched a great game for the Sluggers but to no avail.

Why would Price be pulled after 55 pitches? Freeman, have you figured out those pitcher settings?

Well, I have some great relievers and they are not being used at all so clearly I don't know how to adjust the settings properly...I don't know why got Price got pulled, I guess I would check to see if you accidentally hit quick pull on the settings...it is probably just random...

I've got one reliever with 11 innings and several with zero. Time to fiddle with the settings. I didn't have the quick hook on Price - there must be some calculated chance that a starter will be pulled. What that chance is or what it's based on, I've no idea.

As for my season so far: very pleased with my pitching but the offense has not been there. The Cows don't present much of a long ball threat but they should be getting on base a bit more.

Pitching is good as you might expect with Matt Harvey and Jose Fernandez (and Kimbrel and Uehara in the bullpen). I also have pretty good defense (1 at short, 2 at 2b, 2 at CF, outfielders all have good arms, catchers have good arms) Hitting sucks. My offense is very platoon-oriented-- I have six guys who slug over .500 against righties (and one at .494) so I was hoping for a bit more offense. My ballpark is also oriented to my lefty power hitters but it's not working out so far. My relievers have been used somewhat haphazardly, Kimbrel finally got into a game (and threw over two innings). I wasn't thinking that Kimbrel was the long-relief guy in the bullpen...

To fix the Price issue (55 pitch count), I set my starters to not be pulled before they hit F8. I think that will solve the problem.

For the relievers, I noticed that I had only set one middle relief guy (Smith). Instead of pulling from the pool, the AI always chose Smith which is how he racked up 11 innings in six games. I added another middle guy so that problem should be solved.

And now... a ten game injury to my DH. I've got crap behind him.

For all my bitching, I'm 4-2 and look forward to waking up in the morning to my box scores & game replays!

Freeman... ouch!

I lost the series 1-2 last night to the Pile Drivers but can't complain too much. Those guys can hammer the ball and did. We held our own, though, and all three games were 1-run affairs.

Whatever I did with the settings seemed to have normalized my pitcher use.

Yeah, that wasn't a lot of fun. Can't seem to hit lefties and he threw three at me... And Cobb blew up big time again... And I have to triage with all of my injuries... no answers.

Sorry Freeman - I swept you in your own house! That includes this 12-inning contest: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/game/348762/73

We're out of division play tomorrow night so maybe you can beat up on the rest of the league.

Divisional play takes a break. After the home-and-home series' with my divisional foes, the Cows have an early lead in the standings. Way to represent Redscape in the Central division, Jared.

The Cows' win streak was stopped at 11 though I did win the series. Two very tough teams coming up...

My version of Moneyball has been working out pretty good so far. I lead the league in runs but am tied for the fewest home runs. The pitching staff has been outstanding with the lowest ERA (2.74) and WHIP (0.95) in the league.

The team is platoon oriented so it could be suspectible to relievers turning players around to their bad hitting side. But I mean my team is batting .215. .279, .375. A pitching statt with Matt Harvey and Jose Fernandez as starters (and Cobb, Burnett and Ohlendorff are no slouches either) has an era over 4.00. Kimbrel has an era of 6.75 ( I also have Uehara). I have a lot of lefties and switch-hitters against RHP and my park is suited to left handed-power but I am hitting better on the road. Could it be bad defense? Almonte is an errors machine but I have a 1 at short (range is from 1-4, 1 being best), 2 at second, 2 at third, 2 at center, and my catcher has an arm of -2--arms go from -4 to + 4). All of the arms in my outfied are good, though range is not that great in left and right. So I think defense is not the problem.

Granted I would like to have a better on-base and I really don't have any great offensive players, but I think my cut and paste job with the offense works on paper but it's not working in the game. I can't really figure out why my pitching is getting hit hard. Granted the on-base against righties is a little shaky, but I have got a lot of lefted-handed power in a left-handed power park, and the bottom two players in the line-up are AA in stealing bases (AA is the best).

Anyway it's not working and with a 20% penalty on signing free agents it can't be fixed.

When time permits, I'll take a closer look at your team. Not that I'm an expert, but I'll let you know if anything jumps out at me.

I took a quick look at a few things. Nine unearned runs isn't great (compared to my two) and Almonte isn't doing you any favors on defense. The dice rolls have been pretty evenly split between the hitter & pitcher cards (I checked Jose & Matt to see if that was it - no) but it could still be a run of bad luck. Given that we're only 24 games in, I have a feeling you'll see a correction.

It's a long season...

A few more observations:

Your fielding is hurting you - not so much with errors but not getting to balls in the outfield. This seems to be mostly attributed to Almonte (7 outs of 13 FB-X results) and Brown (6 outs of 14 FB-X results). If you have fly-ball pitchers, this does not bode well. As a counter-point, my fielders in total have recorded an out in 21 of 25 FB-X results. There's lots of great stats like this available for your team.

I also wonder if your starters are being pulled too early. Harvey, Fernandez, & Cobb should be staying most of the game unless they're getting blown out. I have all my starters set to F8 and they typically throw over 100 pitches. Given the thin relief corps you have, it's possible those guys are getting tired out by pitching too many innings.
