Today is the centennial of the end of the Battle of Saint-Mihiel. The allied offensive led by General Pershing was supported by the Americans' large but inexperienced tank corp, which was both trained and led by a young Lieutenant Colonel named George S. Patton. Personally leading the tank corp into battle, Patton was seriously wounded but continued to command from a shell hole. Patton was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his service that day, and, as you may know, his interest in tanks persisted.
