100 years ago yesterday saw the start of the last major German offensive at Verdun. In a surprise attack, the Germans captured nearly one kilometer along the front lines. In 1916 the front moved hundreds of kilometers at a time in the east, but in the west it moved hundreds of meters with the same effort. Success became hard to measure.
