The concept of "war of attrition" came into general understanding during World War I, specifically during the Battle of Verdun. Erich von Falkenhayn, the Chief of Germany's General Staff said that Verdun would, "Frankreich weiß- bluten," or "bleed France white." I guess he decided to only look at one side of the ledger, however, since as Germany was bleeding France white, France was doing the same to Germany.
