That was weird. I must've hit edit instead of reply...

Ha, I did.

Someone said we have enough GMs. I do not know all the ins-and-outs of the rules but I'd be willing to learn of course. Mostly minutiae of course.

Download Realpolitik and play around with it. The program adjudicates - all you do is enter the orders. The maps can be enhanced and converted to publishable files using Paint or some such program. It's all quite easy to learn.

We do have enough GM's come tournament time for standard. They come out of the woodwork then. It's another story to ask someone to host a game with an unknown start date. I think if you really want to attract players, variants are the way to go - they can get standard games and even some variants at a dime-a-dozen on Webdip, Vdip, and others.

Sounds like to revamp the website to make it look more Diplomacy-ish would cost a lot more than $500?

I can't say but you're also assuming that as a priority. Brad & Cody may have different ideas regards budget priorities or what they want long-term.

That's a fair point: How should Redscape position itself at this time? Well, I'm being presumptuous, since I'm not Brad or Cody. But I think it is valid to discuss where we might like to see the site leaning. Redscape has never been a single-game site. We've hosted Game of Thrones, Republic of Rome, Adv. Civ, and a flurry of sports-oriented games. I even heard from a Dip player on another site that they like the Speed Circuit games Kal runs; and that he could fill even more games if he could run them. Colin and I have discussed starting up Republic of Rome, though I admit to being the slacker on that point.

vDip actually has a lot of variants, which I thought was one of its stronger points. However, I don't see all that many variants getting played. Still, that site tends to favor one-day turnarounds (because it is automated), and Gunboat is a very popular format. Both good reasons I don't hang out there.

Still, in addition to the variety of games, it is also worth pushing the Standard-based tournaments and the Dip variants, all driven by real GMs. Getting variant designers such as Charles Féaux de la Croix and Baron Powell to GM their variants here could be a great way to bring in more players. I wonder what ever happened to Minister X? He used to come up with some interesting variants and maps.

I'm trying to run a newbie SC game (I'll move it to the New Games forum). With just Kal & I, we can't run a lot at one time, though.

If you know those fellas, please let them know the advantages of forum-based games. No plowing through countless emails to find the turn maps - they're all stored in one place. Also, game commentary is more organized relative to emails. We'll host pretty much anything (we're that easy). Well.. except kitten porn. We won't do kitten porn. Got it, Brad?

Yes, I think standard does have a future here with the tournaments. We just need a new tourney director. It doesn't have to be RG - create something new.

We're also rolling out a welcome page soon - that should help get new players up and running.

Speaking of tourneys, I wonder if GMBobby would ever come back? He ran a successful one once. Not to mention, a terrific ftf & PBEM player!

He fled the politics forums and never came back. Pretty sure he'd given up on variant design quite a while before that point though.

Wasn't Bobby Germany, I was France and he pounced? The last time you had a game at your place in VA?
